    2020 Engage with Asia Network

Last day to register: Thursday 27 February 2020

    NETWORK FOCUS

CESA schools are places where students live and respect diversity, difference, commonalities, intercultural and ethical understanding. The Engage with Asia Network encourages teachers and students to develop respectful relationships and academic co-constructed curriculum with partners in Asia, through relevant ICTs.

The network will focus on the development of models of effective and sustainable school partnerships with contemporary curriculum and educational collaboration between CESA schools and schools in Asia.

Participants will be directly involved in online collaborative co-construction of curriculum with schools in Asia, with student agency and 21st century pedagogies and capabilities at the forefront of this Network’s work.

It is envisaged that the work to be undertaken through the 2020 Engage with Asia Network will support students in building dialogue and negotiate with other students in Asia on different aspects contributing to greater intercultural understanding and global competence.

    What will actually happen?

    Participants will:

    • Co-construct a Partnership Plan with a school in Asia
    • Prepare online classes and class presentations that favour student voice, student agency, distributed leadership and common areas of the curriculum
    • Show how the CESA Living Learning and Leading Framework is being lived and implemented in their practice, pedagogy and assessment, as a result of their school’s involvement in the network
    • Investigate and share successful models of co-construction and student agency
    • Design student surveys to gather evidence of how students achieve some of the capabilities outlined in the CESA Living Learning Leading Framework, the General Capabilities in the Australian Curriculum as well as Global Competence as outlined in the OECD 2018 PISA
    • use the AC Intercultural Understanding GC and CESA’s Interculturally and Globally Minded Capability to check their students’ progress throughout their involvement

    Members of this Network:

    • will attend 2 central Network days (Adelaide) and 2 Regional Network Days
    • design a partnership plan together with the partner school in Asia
    •  show evidence that their involvement in the Engage with Asia contributes to their school’s Annual Improvement Plan
    • may be supported to visit their partner schools in Asia – details to be discussed and confirmed at the first Network meeting

CESA will support the participation of 3-4 new schools into the network.

2020 Continuity and Transition in Languages and
    Cultures Learning and Teaching

Last day to register: Thursday 27 February 2020

    NETWORK FOCUS

The learning of languages and cultures and its transition points (from primary to secondary, from compulsory to elective, from secondary to the SACE years) must present learners with the opportunity to continue their learning journey (R – 12) in an effective continuum that demonstrates progression in learning and achievement.

The 2018 – 2020 CESA Strategy states that “All Catholic schools have articulated clear B – 12+ pathways and ensured successful transition for children, students and families”. The Continuity and Transition in Languages and Cultures Learning and Teaching Network will work with 2 clusters of schools in ensuring smooth transition between schools and education levels and also continuity of learning.

    Members of the Cluster:

    • will attend 3 school-based cluster meetings
    • will show evidence that their involvement in the 2020 Continuity and Transition in Languages and Cultures Learning and Teaching contributes to their school’s Annual Improvement Plan
    • will visit other schools in the cluster

2020 Innovative Approaches to the learning and teaching
    of languages and cultures

Last day to register: Thursday 27 February 2020

    NETWORK FOCUS

The aims of this project are to:

    • Trial and research innovative pedagogical models that will enhance the current offerings of languages and cultures programs
    • Explore new ways in which the languages and cultures program can contribute to increased student engagement and whole school ownership of the project
    • Be part of a network of schools that can support each other and inform system-wide strategies

2020 is the third year of this project and continuing schools will implement the strategies trialed in 2019. CESA will now support the addition of 3 new schools to the project who will have the opportunity to observe different models in Catholic schools in Melbourne that can be adapted to their own context.

Schools will have the time to research, explore, observe and trial the best models that best suit their contexts and enhance their languages and cultures programs. Continuing schools will work in a mentoring capacity to new schools starting this year.

New participants in this project will attend the Deakin University Professional Learning course on Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) and Gesture Based approaches, partly taught in Melbourne at the same time as the visits to Catholic schools in Melbourne

    Outcomes:
Innovative models begin to be explored, trialled and implemented in order to:

    • provide innovative ways of delivering the languages and cultures program
    • extend languages use and learning beyond languages lessons, into cross-curricula or integrated learning, and contribute to students’ development of General Capabilities
    • create new knowledge, understandings and approaches that can be shared across CESA schools through a formal research partnership
    • contribute to the development of a CESA Languages and Cultures Strategy
    • increase time on task in languages and cultures learning
    • enhance student, staff and overall community engagement through languages learning
    • develop whole school commitment to and ownership of their languages programs

Involvement in this Professional Learning Program will include school visits to Catholic schools in Melbourne and attendance at a Professional Learning course on Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) and Gesture Based approaches by Deakin University.

    Participants :
Languages teacher and leader from 3 new CESA schools in addition to the current 5 members of the project.

    CESA support:

    • Continuing schools will receive a grant of $2,000 to support any activity related to the implementation of the approach chosen
    • New schools will receive a grant of $4,000 to support their visit to Melbourne and any other activity related to this project

There is limited membership available for this Network
