Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) Course

Professional Development Opportunity

Last day to register:    Monday 29th April 2019

COURSE FOCUS

In 2019, the Catholic Education Office offered schools the possibility of participating in a project titled Innovative Approaches to the Teaching and Learning of Languages and Cultures. The three main aims of the project are to:

  • Increase the amount of time dedicated to the learning and teaching of languages and cultures
  • Increase student engagement and
  • Recognise whole school ownership for the approach chosen and the impact it will have on student    learning and outcomes.

CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) is one of the approaches adopted by some of the schools. CLIL refers to a pedagogy with a dual focus on developing outcomes in both language (e.g. French or Chinese) and in content (e.g. Science or Geography) where the teacher of languages partners with a generalist classroom teacher for this purpose.

This course will focus on:

  • Understanding and planning for CLIL
  • Integrating language and content in CLIL programs
  • CLIL lesson design and CLIL in practice
  • Creating CLIL materials and tasks for using CLIL in the classroom
  • Assessment through CLIL and evaluating CLIL programs
  • The process of leading improvement in languages and cultures programs
  • Building the capacity of pedagogical leader(s) to understand the implications of using CLIL as an approach for the learning and teaching of languages and cultures.
