Principals as Learning Leaders in Literacy

The Principals as Learning Leaders in Literacy Program is designed to develop the capabilities of primary school principals as 'effective literacy leaders'.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
There are four modules across three days:
Monday, 4 August - 9.00am-3.30pm (Modules 1 & 2 are on the same day)
Venue: Thebarton Community Centre
Located on the Corner of South Road and Ashwin Parade, Torrensville (car park entrance via South Road.
Module 1 - Leadership for Learning
Leadership research base - what constitutes effective leadership for learning? A Leadership for Learning Blueprint.
Taking action in key leadership priority areas known to help lead learning effectively.
Leading literacy instruction across the school - Self Evaluation/Audit.
Module 2 - Learning Theories, Literacy Practices and Implications
What learning theories are at work in your school?
What is the evidence-based research on effective teaching of the skills of reading and writing?
Collecting the evidence: Indicators of evidence-based literacy practices.
Wednesday, 20 August - 4.00-6.00pm

Module 3 - Literacy and Learning Assessment
Oral language development and rich literacy experiences as foundations of reading and writing success.
Literacy practices in your school - negotiable, non negotiable.
Weaving the literacies.
Wednesday, 3 September - 4.00-6.00pm
Venue: Catholic Education Office Room 7
Module 4 - Literacy Data Gathering and Analysis
Evidence-based planning and decision making.
Usefulness and limits of different forms of data, its analysis and use in establishing priorities for interventions.
Linking managing, organizing and monitoring curriculum and data on reading.
Using disciplined dialogue with staff to explore the implications of data related to literacy learning (reading).

Module 5 - Designing Implementing and Monitoring Literacy Interventions
Significant outcomes of research into interventions in general and literacy interventions in particular; Factors which facilitate or inhibit the implementation of effective literacy interventions (especially in reading).
The Leadership for Learning Blueprint and Intervention Touchstones - tiers, levels or waves.
A Literacy Intervention Planning Checklist.
Wednesday, 22 October - 4.00-6.00pm

Module 6 - Evaluation, Planning, Sustaining
School examples of whole school literacy plans and interventions.
Capabilities of principals and messages from principals.
Reflection on self-evaluation.
