The Effective Teaching of Mathematics Course has been designed to assist teachers to enrich the teaching and learning of mathematics in order to achieve positive learning outcomes for their children.  Participants will explore mathematical content and concepts in number and algebra, and deepen their knowledge of how children develop understanding in this sub-strand of mathematics.  They will use this knowledge to plan learning experiences to engage all of their students and deepen and challenge their thinking.

The use of ICTs (specifically Notebook software) will be explored for the teaching of number and algebra.

The goals of this professional learning are to explore:

  • the Number and Algebra strand of the Australian Curriculum Mathematics, focussing on building the concepts of numeration and the operations
  • teaching and learning through inquiry and problem solving
  • managing the learning environment for the effective teaching and learning of mathematics

This course targets teachers of Years 2-5 and addresses the following focus areas of the  AITSL Australian Professional Standards

  • Content and teaching strategies of the teaching area (2.1)
  • Use teaching strategies (3.3)
  • Support student participation (4.1)

This course consists of three workshops – all of which need to be attended – in Term 2, including term break.
