 CULTURAL RESPECT TRAINING

The Cultural Respect agenda is at the centre of Catholic Education SA’s Strategic Objectives for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education. Leaders, educators and students who are culturally competent are best equipped to be active participants in the process of Reconciliation, building mutually respectful relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians and the wider community.

I am pleased to invite you to a Cultural Respect Workshop facilitated by Ngarrindjeri Elder, Ms Sharon Gollan and her non-Aboriginal colleague, Mr Tony Fletcher, to be held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish School (17 Pennington Terrace, PENNINGTON) on Monday 2nd June. The Aboriginal/non-Aboriginal partnership is a key feature of the workshop, as it directly models the role for non-Aboriginal people working in Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander contexts.

Given her experience and connection with the Western suburbs, Sharon Gollan invites your leadership team to participate at no cost. I hope you can appreciate the significance of this gesture as Sharon and her team enjoy well-earned reputation for excellence in this arena.

The workshop will focus on identifying and exploring racism, and include:

·  Protocols, language and meaning; Hopes and expectations

·  Naming and understanding racism: Definitions and dimensions

·  Identifying dominant culture practices and barriers to acknowledging racism

·  Recognising, understanding and responding to institutional racism

·  Understanding ourselves: Exploring attitudes and values that perpetuate dominance

·  Developing strategies for respectful work with Aboriginal Australians

The timing of this professional learning opportunity is significant as it falls within National Reconciliation Week which celebrates the rich cultures and histories of the First Australians and aims to foster reconciliation discussion and activities.
