PROFESSIONAL LEARNING IN NUMERACY

USING PROBLEM SOLVING TO
TEACH MATHEMATICS IN YEARS 2 & 3

This course targets teachers of years 2 and 3 and key numeracy teachers.  It has been designed to further develop effective teaching strategies in mathematics in order to achieve positive learning outcomes for all children.   Participants will explore mathematical content and concepts in the Australian Curriculum Mathematics Strand, Number and Algebra, and deepen their knowledge of how children develop understanding in these areas. They will use this knowledge to plan learning experiences based on a problem solving pedagogy - using tasks to engage all of their students and deepen and challenge their thinking. The goals of this professional learning are to explore:

  • the Number and Algebra strand of the Australian Curriculum Mathematics, focussing on building the concepts of numeration and the operations
  • teaching and learning through problem solving and inquiry
  • managing the learning environment for the effective teaching and learning of mathematics

This course addresses the following focus areas of the AITSL Australian Professional Standards:

  • Content and teaching strategies of the teaching area  (2.1)
  • Use teaching strategies (3.3)
  • Support student participation (4.1)

This course consists of two workshops, both of which need to be attended:

Friday 5 September, 1.00 - 4.30 pm

Room 8, CEO, George Street, Thebarton

Friday 19 September, 1.00 - 4.30 pm

Room 6 ,  CEO, George Street, Thebarton

Registration will close on Wednesday 3 September 2014.

Whilst we welcome individuals attending from a school we would also encourage teachers to attend in pairs or small groups as when more than one teacher participates opportunities for collaboration result in increased benefits for the school.
