Catholic Education SA invites expressions of interest from teachers to be involved in a 1.5 year mathematics course.

This course is in response to the Australian Curriculum and the subsequent demand by teachers wishing to further expand their own mathematical knowledge.  This course consists of three units, to further develop teacher’s current understanding in Number & Algebra, Measurement & Geometry and Statistics & Probability.  Although it is preferable that teachers undertake all three units, there is the option that units can be undertaken individually.  Teachers will need to register for each unit separately on the CESA Registration Centre.

The course has been designed to build on teachers’ current mathematical understanding.  It will predominately use an inquiry approach to the learning of mathematics.  As this course has a focus primarily on content, it is open to teachers from Reception to Year 10 who want to further their own mathematical knowledge.

COURSE OVERVIEW

Outcomes:

  • build a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts
  • be a more confident  and enthusiastic mathematics teacher
  • be more numerate citizens and recognise and develop numeracy across other learning areas to enrich learning for students
  • be motivated to continue the journey of lifelong learning of mathematics

AITSL professional standards for teachers:

This course addresses aspects of standard 2,3,6 and 7 of the AITSL professional standards for teachers, specifically

2.1:  Content and teaching strategies of the teaching area

3.5:  Use effective classroom communication

6.2:  Engage in professional learning and improve practice

7.4:  Engage in professional teaching networks and broader communities

Time allocation: 14.5 hours if all 5 sessions are attended (please see times below)

Structure and requirements of the course:

The course consists of three units: Number & Algebra and Statistics & Probability units and Measurement & Geometry which is being run in terms 1 and 2 of 2014.

Teachers can opt to do one or two units. It is however, preferable that they undertake all 3 units. It is expected that they attend all sessions for the unit(s) they enrol in.
