Expression of Interest:

Three Year Numeracy Project:

 Middle Years 7-9

(beginning in 2014)

CESA Numeracy Projects aim to develop a deeper pedagogical and conceptual understanding in the teaching and learning of Mathematics and Numeracy.  This project runs for three years and include exploring the three strands of the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics, the General Capabilities and the Cross Curriculum Priorities.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Teachers will:

  • develop a shared understanding of how students construct mathematical knowledge and develop numeracy;
  • reflect and use more effective pedagogies, including inquiry approaches and use data to inform learning;
  • plan and implement learning programs that support the development of students’ mathematics and numeracy;
  • explore and use digital technologies in learning mathematics and in developing numeracy;
  • explore current literature and research relating to mathematics education, numeracy and education in general;
  • use action research and case study to reflect on students’ learning and their own teaching practices.

Mathematical content for 2014:

Australian Curriculum: Mathematics Statistics and Probability. The exploration of this strand will be integrated with Number & Algebra and Measurement & Geometry and other curriculum areas.

Probability

  • Experimental probability
  • Theoretical probability
  • Using proportional reasoning to describe probability

Statistics

  • Statistical reasoning
  • Representing data
  • Measure of central tendency
  • Statistical investigations
