The Effective Teaching of Mathematics Course has been designed to assist teachers to enrich the teaching and learning of mathematics in order to achieve positive learning outcomes for their children.  Participants will explore mathematical content and concepts in number and algebra, thus deepen their knowledge of how children develop understanding in this area.  They will use this knowledge to plan learning experiences that will engage all of their students and deepen and challenge their thinking.

The use of ICTs (specifically Notebook software) will be explored for the teaching of number and algebra.

The goals of this professional learning are to explore:

  • the Number and Algebra strand of the Australian Curriculum Mathematics, focussing on building the concepts of numeration and the operations
  • teaching and learning through inquiry and problem solving
  • managing the learning environment for the effective teaching and learning of mathematics

This course targets teachers of Years 2 and 3 and addresses the following focus areas of the Australian Professional Standards

  • Content and teaching strategies of the teaching area (2.1)
  • Use teaching strategies (3.3)
  • Support student participation (4.1)

This course consists of three workshops - all need to be attended - in Term 3 (including the term break).

  • Friday  6 September, 1,00 pm to 4.30 pm, Room 8, CEO, George Street, Thebarton
  • Friday 13 September, 1.00 pm to 4.30 pm, Room 7,  CEO, George Street, Thebarton
  • Friday 11 October, 9.00 am to 12.30pm, Room 8, CEO, George Street, Thebarton
    (Term break)

Registration will close on Tuesday 3 September 2013.

We would encourage teachers to attend in small groups as research shows that when more than one teacher participates opportunities for shared reflection and collaboration result in increased benefits for the school.
