Literacy for Learning Course 2013

Literacy for Learning is a 6 module course aligned to the Australian Curriculum where literacy is represented as a strand of the English curriculum and as a general capability essential for all curriculum areas. Literacy for Learning has been developed in response to the definition of literacy in the Australian Curriculum that is informed by a social view of language that considers how language works to construct meaning in different social and cultural contexts.
The course Overview:
- is relevant for all teachers and provides strategies that teachers can use across the curriclum for effective planning and teaching
- underpins all its strategies with an understanding of the role of language and literacy in learning
- builds teachers' knowledge of the literacy identified in the Australian Curriculum literacy as a general capability across all learning areas and in English
- promotes whole-school approaches to addressing literacy teaching
Expectations:
Participants are expected to attend every session, complete Between Module Activities, Module Readings and participate in discussions.
Module Sessions:
The first two modules will occur on one whole day; the subsequent 4 modules will be 2.00 - 5.00pm fortnightly.
The workshops include a range of activities:
- input from the tutor or through DVD or text material
- discussion or other collaborative learning activities
- practical activities that are transferable to classroom contexts
Modules Overview/Schedule
Professional Development Hours: There are 18 hours for workshop participation and up to 40 hours non-contact time to complete all BMA's and readings.
Certificate:
On completion of the course participants will be issued with a certificate indicating modules attended, activities and readings completed and points accrued towards the Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language.
Participants are provided with course books containing workshop notes, readings, resources and school or classroom activities.
