Aboriginal Education Focus Teacher
Network Day - Kaurna Language Workshop

Tuesday 29 July 2025 
(Week 2, Term 3)

from 9.00am - 3.30pm

 Venue: Adelaide Pavilion, Veale Gardens,
Corner South Terrace and Peacock Road, Adelaide
(in the Terrace Room).


FOCUS OF PROFESSIONAL NETWORK MEETING:

  • Welcome, Acknowledgement, Prayer and Introductions
  • Kira Yaltu Bain, Kaurna language specialist and Labhaoise Upton, Teacher will lead the workshop.
    The workshop addresses questions about:
    • how to appropriately use Kaurna language in the classroom;
    • explores the ethics and protocols involved; and 
    • your place in the process while remaining accountable to the Kaurna community.

The day will equip participants with the fundamentals of authentic, respectful delivery and the building blocks of a programme that will move beyond simple greetings and songs, incorporating culture, curriculum and resources.

INTENDED FOR:

Aboriginal Education Focus Teachers. If the Aboriginal Education Focus Teacher is unable to attend, the school can consider sending another staff member to this professional learning opportunity.

FACILITATORS:

  • Kira Yaltu Bain, Kaurna language specialist and Labhaoise Upton, Teacher.
    With 33 years' teaching experience between them at primary and tertiary level, and language experience in teaching contexts, curriculum development and teacher coaching, these accredited Kaurna specialists offer a day of relaxed professional learning that reaches into the heart of language education both on a relational and curriculum level.
AITSL Australian Professional Standards for Teachers include:
  • Standard 1: Know students and how they learn (focus area 1.4)
  • Standard 2: Know the content and how to teach it (focus area 2.4)
  • Standard 6: Engage in professional learning (focus area 6.2).

REQUIREMENT:

  • Participants are encouraged to bring their own device.

Morning Tea and lunch will be provided. Please advise if you have dietary requirements when registering for the Network Day.
