The Australian Curriculum: English states that "students bring with them to school a wide range of experiences with language and texts" and that these experiences are "rich resources for further learning about language, literature and literacy".

This 3 day series of workshops will explore the following elements of emergent literacy:

  • The importance of oral language in learning to read and write
  • Developing metalinguistic awareness (the child's ability to think about and manipulate language) through classroom routines
  • Understanding the functions of print
  • Learning to crack the alphabetic code and how to teach this in integrated and language-rich contexts
  • Using the Australian Curriculum: English to design rich learning tasks.
