FOCUS OF PROFESSIONAL NETWORK MEETING:

  • A practical session called 'How to work with First Nations Artists in the classroom' presented by Thomas Readett. Thomas will facilitate a 3.5 hour session to explore the topic and participants will:
    • Learn directly from a First Nations Artist to understand how to work with First Nations Artists
    • Gain practical advice about considerations for engaging with First Nations Artists in school arts programs
    • Understand the importance of cultural safety and how to implement this in the classroom
    • Acknowledge the historical, cultural and political issues affecting First Nations people and their work in the arts and culture settings, and
    • Time allocated for questions and discussion throughout the session.
  • Session after lunch is for networking in smaller groups and to brainstorm ideas about connecting with local First Nations providers. 
  • Opportunity for school representatives to share with the group some ideas and experiences regarding the Catholic Education SA's (CESA's) Community Engagement Grants and Reconciliation SA Grants to build connections with local First Nations Providers. 
  • Time to engage with the Aboriginal Education page on CESA's Intranet.

Aboriginal Education Focus Teachers.

FACILITATORS:

  • Thomas Readett, Visual Artist and Musician
  • Geoff Aufderheide, Aboriginal Education Advisor, Catholic Education SA.

FACILITATOR INFORMATION:

Thomas Readett is a Ngarrindjeri man who is a Visual Artist and Musician. Thomas is well known in Adelaide and works in many schools as a mural artist. He was instrumental in setting up the Art Gallery of South Australia's education program  about First Nations Artists. Thomas was part of a team that developed the resource 'How to work with First Nations artists in the classroom' (National Association for the Visual Arts). This resource has been provided to the Aboriginal Education Focus Teachers in Catholic Schools.  

AITSL Australian Professional Standards for Teachers include:

  • Standard 1: Know students and how they learn (focus area 1.4)
  • Standard 2: Know the content and how to teach it (focus area 2.4)
  • Standard 6: Engage in professional learning (focus area 6.2)

REQUIREMENT:

  • Participants are encouraged to bring their own device.
  • Photographs will be taken during Thomas Readett's session - please advise if you would not like your photo taken.
  • The participants are also encouraged to bring along some pictures or experiences to  share regarding how they used the CESA's Community Engagement Grants and Reconciliation SA Grants. 

Morning Tea and Lunch will be provided. Please advise if you have dietary requirements when registering for the Network Day.
