Description

We invite you to join us at the Rich Mathematical Approaches Showcase, to engage in the collaborative inquiries and presentations conducted by your staff as part of the Rich Approaches to Mathematics Collaborative Inquiry Network. This event offers an excellent opportunity to gain insights into your staff's learning journey and to celebrate their efforts in driving meaningful improvements in the teaching and learning of mathematics.

Associate Professor Helen Chick from the School of Education at the University of Tasmania, will be this year's keynote speaker. Her research work has focused on pedagogical content knowledge in mathematics for teachers, the use of examples in teaching, and statistics education. Helen will share her expertise in explicit teaching of Mathematics, drawing from the model that she helped to develop for the Mathematics Hub. Helen is a qualified high school teacher with a PhD in mathematics and currently works with pre-service and in-service primary and secondary teachers.

Keynote: Demystifying the work of mathematics teaching.

  • What teaching practices help students to learn mathematics?
  • What might good “explicit teaching” look like?
  • Is it just about “I do — we do — you do” and writing learning outcomes on the board?

In this presentation, we will conceptualise effective mathematics teaching as something that focuses on explicit learning. We will look at seven teaching practices that will make a difference for students’ learning outcomes in our mathematics classrooms. Bringing these components together will allow students to develop their mathematical skills, understanding and reasoning. These practices will be illustrated with an activity that builds the mathematical ideas of probability, proportion, and place value.

In addition, Professor Amie Albrecht and Dr Lisa O’Keeffe, our collaborative research partners from the University of South Australia, will provide an update on their findings derived from the pre-survey data collected from participating teachers. Their insights have significant implications for our schools and system.

For more information, please refer to the attached Rich Mathematical Approaches Showcase Program Flyer.

We encourage one or more members of the leadership team to attend the full-day event where possible, or part of the day. Please indicate your attendance for morning tea and lunch when registering, to help us organise catering accordingly.
