Working Restoratively in Catholic Schools: Junior Schools (R-5)
Cost: $180.00
Session 1 and 2 are a rudimentary introduction to restorative practices in schools for leaders and teachers. The principles and values that underpin restorative justice are examined and contrasted with non restorative approaches to school discipline issues. Participants become familiar with the restorative script and practice using restorative language to help students consider the impact of their actions on others and themselves. Participants will also be introduced to the continuum of restorative approaches available to teachers and leaders when responding to misconduct. The early years session will look more closely at an early years version of the restorative script developed by Jane Langley and Bill Hansberry and teaching restorative thinking to young school aged children.
The classroom applications days will briefly recap basic principles of restorative work with a focus on primary years and above and go a step further into looking at restorative solutions for groups of students and whole class group. Circles and whole class conferences will be explored as a means to develop awareness of troublesome issues within class groups and to bring out shared concern and group voice. Circles will also be examined as a forum for classes to reach agreements about group values and expected conduct.
Places will be restricted to two key staff members from each school community and it will be expected that those people will attend two targeted workshops to be held at the Adelaide Sailing Club.
