The Social and Emotional Development of Gifted Children Workshop and Discussion Forum
"Like Minds" is the 2022 theme of Gifted Awareness Week Australia (21-29 May). Effectively supporting the social and emotional needs of our gifted children can truly help them flourish in their own wellbeing and achievements.
This two and a half hour interactive workshop which includes reviews of practical classroom resources will be facilitated by Dr Jae Jung (Associate Professor at the University of New South Wales and Director of Gifted Education Resource, Research, and Information Centre). It will be targeted at teachers, a brief introduction to key topics in gifted education (i.e., definitions, underachievement and identification) will be followed by discussion of the socio-emotional development of gifted students. Among the topics to be covered will be the socio-emotional characteristics of gifted students, common socio-emotional issues faced by gifted students, perfectionism, socio-emotional curriculum to support gifted students, and bibliotherapy as a non-curricular intervention to support the socio-emotional development of gifted students. Participants will be asked to engage in a number of activities during the presentation. Time will be devoted at the end to answer any questions.
