Primary, Secondary, Oral Language New Arrivals Workshops
Many schools enrol EAL students who are recent arrivals to Australia or were born in Australia and have arrived at shcool speaking a language other than English. Teachers require an understanding of students' needs and the use of effective strategies to support their language and literacy development and success at school. The EAL program will be offering four workshops in Term 2 which will provide information and strategies to support the language development and wellbeing of new arrival students. Each session will have a different focus, therefore participants may choose to attend one, two or all of the sessions.
Session #3: New Arrivals Oral Language Workshop
This workshop is suitable for Primary teachers who would like to learn more about planning for oral language development for students with minimal English language proficiency.
Competency with spoken language is a crucial prerequisite of learning (ACARA, 2011). It is through oral language that EAL students are able to access the curriculum, participate in social interactions and develop a bridge into reading and writing. This workshop will focus on two categories of oral languages: Talk as process and Talk as performance. The course will provide participants with ways to plan for a balanced oral language program using ESL Scales 1-4 combined with practical strategies that can be applied in classroom or intensive withdrawal sessions.
Participants are provided with workshop notes and school and classroom activities
