Gifted Education 101: Basic introduction to foundational concepts

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This interactive, introductory workshop is offered for educators beginning to intentionally focus on effective, research-based supports for gifted students. It is intentionally offered in Term 4 of 2021 in order to help inform planning for the 2022 schooling year. Its key learning intentions are as follows:

Knowledge:

  • overview of current directions for Gifted Education within CESA
  • how gifted students are identified
  • common traits of gifted students
  • two main acceleration approaches

Do:

  • fill out teacher indentification forms

Understand:

  • four key teaching strategies used in Gifted Education
  • Levels of Service (Coleman & Hughes, 2009) model of Gifted Education.

AITSL AUSTRALIAN PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS FOR TEACHERS INCLUDE

4.1 identify strategies to support inclusive student participation and engagement in classroom activities

Standard 5: assess, provide feedback, and report on student learning

5.4 demonstrate the capacity to interpret student assessment data to evaluate student learning and modify teaching practice
