Using Functional Grammar to Develop
Reading Comprehension

This one day workshop is suitable for teachers from year 2 - 9, who wish to learn more about explicitly teaching reading comprehension.

The workshop will explore the questions:

  • What is comprehension?
  • How can we teach it?
  • How can we cater for ESL students in the process?

Workshop activies draw from the research of P.D. David Pearson and from the Functional Model of language, in particular the appraisal system. The approach taken in this workshop has been successfully trialled by teachers in a South Australian Catholic School, with positive results.

The workshop will take participants through 6 comprehension strategies and introduce them to the appraisal language system which supports students in making meaning from what they are reading.

Participants will also have the opportunity to plan for their own classrooms, using the resources provided in the workshop.
