Designing a Balanced Whole School Approach to Acceleration and Enrichment for Gifted Students

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This interactive and hands-on workshop focuses on meeting the needs of gifted students using a balanced and targeted whole school approach. The workshop will be divided into two main sections.

1. Overview and strategies

This section will provide an overview of common, research-based single subject and year level acceleration approaches for gifted students. Common strengths, challenges, and tensions connected with various acceleration approaches will be addressed. Both short and long-term implications of acceleration will be discussed. Practical strategies for facilitating a range of acceleration approaches will be introduced. Local acceleration case studies will be examined. Emerging CESA Gifted Education draft guidelines on acceleration will be discussed.

2. Building programs

This section will focus on how to build a balanced enrichment program that adds to or goes beyond the existing curriculum within a school setting. Resources such as organisations supporting extra-curricular enrichment activities, formal and informal mentorship programs, and competitions will be laid out.
