Identifying Gifted Students
Designing a Whole School Approach Using Multiple Strategies and Tools
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This interactive and hands-on workshop focuses on meeting the needs of gifted students. Recent research (Jarvis & Henderson, 2015) shows that approaches used to identify gifted students in South Australian schools in inconsistent. A recent survey (2021) within CESA indicates that school marks or academic performance are used as the main approach to identifying gifted students. While school achievement is an important indication of giftedness, other multiple in school strategies are needed to effectively identify these students in order to better meet their learning and wellbeing needs.
This workshop will provide an overview of common identification approaches for gifted students. It will provide guidance on how to design a contextually appropriate, whole school approach to identifying gifted students. Multiple practical tools such as teacher identification forms for gifted students will be provided. Some of the challenges of identifying gifted students who are underachieving or members of cultural minority groups will be addressed.
