2020 Using Mentor Texts to Teach Language and Literacy Dr Misty Adoniou

FOCUS:The CESA EAL program has engaged Dr Misty Adoniou, associate professor at University of Canberra, to facilitate a series of four workshops focusing on using mentor texts to develop vocabulary, oral language reading and writing. These workshops will be suitable for all teachers of EAL learners in the Early Years through to Secondary.
Dr Adoniou is an Associate Professor in Language, Literacy and TESOL at the University of Canberra. She was lead writer for the national English as an Additional Language Teachers Resource which accompanies the Australian Curriculum, and a co-writer of the Literacy General Capability. She researches and writes in the fields of literacy, teacher professional knowledge and standards, and is a sought after speaker, nationally and internationally. She has received numerous teaching awards, including an OLT National Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning and the 2014 Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence. She works closely with schools and education systems around the country leading professional learning in spelling, grammar and writing. These workshops are an excellent opportunity for educators in CESA schools.
Each workshop will build on learning and skills from the previous workshop. Participants will be expected to attend all four workshops and commit to trialling and reflecting on new strategies introduced in the workshops.
