 WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

Science teachers are responsible for teaching the language and literacy of Science. The teacher resource: Composing Written Science Texts - Australian Curriculum: Science 7-10 is designed to support teachers of Science and STEM in embedding explicit teaching of the text structures and grammar of Science writing into Science learning. 

Through participation in these workshops and a brief action research cycle, teachers will be supported to effectively utilise this resource in order to embed teaching of the language and literacy of written texts within the context of the science topic and assessment tasks.

COURSE INFORMATION
When:
  Workshop 1: Wednesday 24 July - Room 7, 4.00pm - 6.00pm  
                 and
                 Subsequent Workshop 2: Thursday 05 September - Room 74.00pm - 6.00pm
       

Location: Catholic Education Office, 116 George St, Thebarton 
                       
A minimum of 10 is required for this Professional Learning to proceed

  • All Science and STEM teachers, Science coordinators, middle school teachers and coordinators 
  •  Teachers who already have a copy of this resource and would like to use it more effectively

Workshop 1  - Plan

Overview of the resource.
Model learning design and strategies for teaching the specific language features
Apply this to a written task within your own class  

Between sessions: Act and Observe 

Professional learning actions
C
onsultant support for text analysis and learning design
Implement a series of teaching/learning lessons and observe the effects 

Workshop 2  Reflect

Reflect on your professional learning inquiry actions and observations 
Share annotated model text and/or successful student texts OR documented language teaching activity
