COURSE DESCRIPTION

Vicarious Trauma is a psychological term used to refer to changes in a person that can occur when they are repeatedly exposed to traumatic material (Morrison, 2007).

It can lead to a transformation in the inner experiences, core beliefs, cognitive schema of educators as well as a disruption in the educators' view of self, others and the world. Vicarious trauma is a combination of organisational, professional and personal contributors. It is serious if it impacts educators and support staff.

Not everyone working with traumatised children, young people, adult and their families will experience vicarious trauma. However, all staff have the potential to be vicariously traumatised when working with traumatised people. Those who experience Vicarious Trauma are naturally affected by their work and do not have a personal failing or weakness.

Repair from vicarious traumatisation required a holistic response - which equally addresses the layers of impact.

There are multiple impacts of Vicarious Trauma that can affect us physically, sensorily, emotionally, cognitively and reflectively.
