Cultural Artist in Residence

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST

In partnership with Karl Telfer, a well-known Aboriginal cultural specialist, we would like to offer the valuable opportunity for school communities  to participate in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education throughout 2017.

Karl Winda Telfer - A proud Aboriginal man, Karl comes from a family of strong cultural and political activity, and has been involved in Aboriginal cultural and spiritual renewal all his life. Karl is a highly respected cultural educator and story-teller, as well as a talented presenter, artist and designer.

Karno Kuri Martin - Karno has been mentored by his Uncle, Karl Winda Telfer, for most of his life. Karno is currently working at the Marine Discovery Centre and is also an accomplished performer  with South Australia's traditional Aboriginal dance group Yellaka.

Karl and Karno are available to support the facilitation of a variety of cultural programmes and opportunities to develop a greater understanding of any of the following:

1.    Cultural Safety and Respect program

2.    Cultural Identity

3.    Cultural Methodology

4.    Pedagogy of the oppressed

5.    Cultural Art

6.    Cultural practice

7.    Ways of Understanding Living Culture

8.    Cultural Camps

9.    Cultural Dance and Story telling

10.  Site visits over country

11.  Cultural Ecologies

12.  Cultural Mapping research

13.  Family research – Bloodlines/Songlines

14.  Artefacts/Shelters/Weapons/Fire/Plants/Fibre etc

15.  Consultant for design and construction of Indigenous gardens

 

Each of their consultancies support engagement and learning in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education.   Karl and Karno will be supported by an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Educational Consultant to implement and lead pedagogical change.

This program is fully funded in 2017 as part of the Culturally Safe Schools Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural artists program. To complement the program, a commitment to whole school professional learning in cultural respect and safety with renowned facilitators will be expected and negotiated. This program will also be fully funded.
