COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Australian Childhood Foundation (ACF) works with a range of health, welfare, education and legal professionals to support vulnerable, abused and traumatised children. Since 2014 CESA has been working in partnership with the ACF to promote awareness and understanding of abuse and how to support children who have experience abuse-related trauma. To this end the ACF is facilitating a professional learning workshop on the relationship between trauma and adolescent mental health.

This workshop will develop an understanding of trauma and its impact on brain development and functioning. From this basis it will examine how trauma effects adolescent brain development focusing specifically on risk taking and impulse control as part of normative development. It will then consider the mental health issues of trauma with a view to building on participant's skills in assessing trauma and methods of intervention in school settings.

The learning outcomes for this workshop are to:

  • Increase participant understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of trauma and disadvantage and its impact on brain development and functioning.
  • Examine adolescent brain development and the impact of trauma.
  • Develop an understanding of adolescent risk taking and impulse control as part of normative development.
  • Consider mental health issues experienced in school settings through a trauma informed lens.
  • Assist educators with the confidence and skills to respond to young people at risk of abuse, promote environments that effectively respond to the critical needs of young people at risk and enhance child abuse prevention.
  • Consider some trauma behaviours and strategies to support engagement in learning.
