Dear Colleagues

The Numeracy Team invites expressions of interest from teachers and leaders who have leadership in mathematics and/or science to attend a workshop which will address the integration of mathematics and science (STEM).

The workshop will be facilitated by:

• Professor Mike Gaffney – Deputy Dean, Faculty of Education Science Technology and Maths at the University of Canberra, and
  
• Dr Lynn Walker – Director of Teaching and Learning – Burgmann College, ACT.
  

In this workshop, approaches and resources for integrating student learning experiences in mathematics and science will be presented.  Participants will have the opportunity to explore ideas, possibilities and practical examples of maths-science integration that are being developed through the Commonwealth funded ‘Australian Mathematics and Science Partnerships Programme’ (AMSPP) National Mentoring for Science & Mathematics Teachers Project.

Workshop Themes:

• Learning mathematics and science in tandem:
• • the rationale and context for integration;
  • practical examples – seeing ‘maths in science’ and ‘science in maths’;
  • planning for learning.
• Leading ‘STEM’ in schools:
• • creating curriculum coherence;
  • changing teaching mindsets and practices;
  • considering organisational barriers and opportunities.

Primary Years Numeracy Network and Secondary Network teachers, please note that this workshop day replaces the Term 3 network.

Teachers attending this workshop need to commit to a following:

• Attend a follow-up workshop in Term 4 (to be advised);
• Work with others in their schools in the mathematics and science area as per the workshop;
• Willingness to share the schools’ learning, their own learning, resources with others.

Schools are welcome to send more than one person.

The office will contribute only one day TRT per school.
