This seminar is for CESA schools in PAT Phases 3 and 4 currently using PAT-M who are looking to further develop their use of assessment data to inform the development of targeted maths learning and teaching programs. Each school should nominate two staff to attend, one of whom should be the school numeracy/maths leader.
Session one: Participants interpret the PAT-M scale and develop their understanding of a developmental continuum. This detailed understanding of the domain map will help teachers to understand how progression and growth is described within PAT-M.
Session two: Workshop participants will use a set of collected, analysed and interpreted PAT-M data to develop their understandings of PAT-M reports. They will learn to make sensible generalisations about PAT-M data and identify what teachers need to know and be able to do to improve students’ maths skills.
Session three: Using the PAT Teaching Resources Centre as a starting point, participants learn how these research-based teaching and learning tasks are designed and will walk away with an understanding of how they can apply the same principles to the design of targeted teaching and learning sequences in their schools.
Session four: Participants are introduced to classroom based action research as a model for continuous evidence based improvement. They will examine a case study of a school who has used PAT-M data to guide their action research and will begin to identify ways that this approach might work in their school context. Participants learn to develop realistic targets for student growth and will set their own goal for action research at the conclusion of the day.
