COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course will provide teachers of middle years Science with knowledge and understandings about a scaffolding pedagogy which supports their students to successfully comprehend and compose common Science texts using relevant structures and language features. Participants as teacher researchers will experience, deconstruct, apply and then review the strategies in their classrooms.

INTENDED FOR:
This workshop is suitable for teachers of middle years (7-10) Science however teachers of other subject areas are welcome.

COURSE INFORMATION:
Participants are required to attend all 3 sessions and commit to 'between session' classroom application and research. We strongly encourage colleagues to attend together

PROGRAM OUTLINE:

  • pre-reading/viewing of scaffolding strategies
  • experience and deconstruction and explanation of scaffolding strategies
  • practice/application of scaffolding strategies i.e. detailed reading, deconstruction and joint construction of Science texts (Investigation Report)
  • Understanding of relevant text structures and language features and useful teaching strategies
  • implementation and reflection

System accredited module: Yes - up to 6 points towards the CESA Certificate in Teaching English as an Additional Language

Cost: no workshop fee
