Reading Recovery KLT & EAL FORUM 2015

Early Literacy and EALD Students:

Commonalities and diversity

Dr. Alan Williams

The workshop will explore issues in meeting the needs of EALD learners in early literacy programs in mainstream schools. This will involve exploring the ways in non-native speakers of English come to literacy in English in school contexts, and exploring strategies to assist these learners in developing English-literacy skills.

There will be three sessions in the day, covering the following topics:

  • Understanding the backgrounds and prior learning experiences of EALD learners, and how they may be both similar and different to the experiences and prior learning of native English-speaking students;
  • Identifying language and literacy learning needs of EALD learners, and using assessment to take EALD students further;
  • Exploring strategies to meet the literacy learning needs of EAL learners.

Each topic will include input from the presenter, including videos of EALD students at different stages of learning, exploration of issues and application of ideas that arise from the presentation, and some practical application for participants.
