'Contemporary Approaches to Literacy Education' is a core component for the Catholic Education SA Certificate in Teaching Literacy.

To complete the certificate, teachers need to participate in this course.

This online 6 (or optional 9) point course explores fundamental issues in literacy by considering how theory meets practice in the classroom. The program is intended to provide participants with the basis for a more developed and informed consideration of various aspects of literacy in modern times. It encourages critical reflection and debate around questions such as:

  • What theories inform what I teach and how I teach?
  • What are the wider issues around literacy?
  • What kinds of literacies will my students need in these "new times"?
  • What does the Australian Curriculum say about teaching Literacy and English?
  • What do I need to consider when planning for contemporary literacy teaching and learning?

Course structure: This online course requires teachers, to post comments in response to online readings and video links.

Estimated time to complete course: Approximately eighteen hours (6 points), twenty five hours (9 points)
