Using Instructional Rounds to support improvement in Literacy and Student Learning

Principals and school leaders are invited to register their interest in an exploration of the Instructional Rounds model of school improvement in Semester 1 and 2. This professional learning opportunity for principals and senior leaders will be facilitated by members of the Literacy Team in support of their focus on elements of the Continuous Improvement Framework for Catholic Schools.

Instructional Rounds is a model of school improvement developed at Harvard University and is increasingly being practised in school systems in a number of countries. The model focuses on what is called the instructional core and uses a systematic protocol for observational data collection and feedback for the specific purpose of improvements in instruction and student learning.

It is intended that this exploration of the Instructional Rounds over the year will involve the equivalent of 4 and a half days in Semester 1 and 4 days in Semester 2 where a formal “rounds” process will be undertaken. Attached is a proposed schedule and short reading. On the basis of our introductory experience in 2014, we will limit the number to twenty participants who are able to commit to the full year program. These professional conversations address AITSL Standards for some leaders and the Principal Standard for Principals. There is also an opportunity for Principals to cite their IR learning/network involvement in their Appraisal and Professional Learning Plans in support of integrating professional learning within the continuous improvement process in schools.
