Celebrating Indigenous Culture in Society and the Classroom
COURSE INFORMATION
Day 4 of the ATSI Focus Teacher Program 2014. Intended for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Focus Teachers and school leaders with responsibility for ATSI education.
OVERVIEW
Aboriginal writer and academic, Jared Thomas, and Mᾱori academic and lecturer of Mᾱori language and culture, Hine-iti-moana Greensill, will lead an interactive, fun and informative presentation focusing on understandings of ‘race’ and how these impact on our relationships with others, and the transformation that occurs when Indigenous culture is celebrated in society and the classroom.
Hine-iti-moana will provide an overview of the Mᾱori educational experience and discuss the establishment of the Kura Kaupapa movement that has enabled the expression of Mᾱori aspirations, values and principles through the New Zealand education system. The positive outcomes that have stemmed from this movement will also be explored along with key success factors for Mᾱori and Aboriginal students.
Jared and Hine-iti-moana will speak from experience as Indigenous people and learners and suggest ways to get key points across to the staff you work with as well as strategies that can be used to engage Indigenous learners both inside and outside the classroom.
