Three Year Numeracy Project

 Early Years

Expression of Interest

Catholic Education SA invites expressions of interest from schools and teachers to participate in a three year numeracy project - Early Years (R-2).

Over the three years the teachers will deepen their pedagogical and conceptual understanding in the teaching and learning of mathematics and numeracy.  The 3 year project will address the three mathematics strands as per the Australian Curriculum.

PROJECT AIMS

  • focus on the competent, intelligent, relational and interdependent child
  • develop a shared understanding of how students construct mathematical knowledge and develop numeracy
  • explore ways to build on students’ prior knowledge so learning can be differentiated
  • explore contemporary and effective pedagogies including inquiry, problem solving and play based approaches in the learning of mathematics
  • engage in task design
  • plan and implement learning programs that support the development of students’ mathematics and numeracy
  • explore current literature and research relating to mathematics education, numeracy and education in general
  • become more reflective practitioners – reflecting and acting on students’ learning, their own learning and pedagogies
  • use the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics to plan for learning and teaching
  • use data to inform planning, decision making and learning
  • explore the use of digital technologies and computer software to further enhance mathematical concepts and numeracy
  • have opportunities to integrate the Design & Technologies F-10 Scope & Sequence (Australian Curriculum) with mathematics
  • explore effective assessment strategies

In 2015, the main focus will be the Measurement and Geometry Strand and the Proficiency Strands of the Australian Curriculum, Mathematics.

The main focus will be on developing geometric reasoning and measurement.  Measurement and geometry will be addressed simultaneously focusing on the following mathematical concepts:

  • what it means to measure as well as how to measure;
  • developing language of space and measurement;
  • shape recognition;
  • development of spatial sense and measurement sense;
  • awareness of and properties of shapes and solids;
  • visualization;
  • transformations
  • theories and research in effective teaching and learning of geometry and measurement.
