Investing in Focus Schools Program

‘DEVELOPING RESPECTFUL SERVICE RESPONSES IN WORKING WITH ABORIGINAL PEOPLE’

This workshop will focus on identifying and exploring racism.  Sharon Gollan from Cultural Respect Training and Consultancy will lead the workshop.  Jonathan Lindsay-Tjapaltjarri Hermawan will be present as a critical friend.

Areas to be covered include:

  • Revisiting the naming of racism and institutional racism
  • Developing responses to address the effects of colonisation and racism    
  • Examining the historical context that impacts on the lives of Aboriginal Australians    
  • Identifying the ongoing effects of colonisation and dispossession on Aboriginal Australians
  •  Understanding the implications of the historical context and ongoing effects for policy and program development and/or human services work with Aboriginal Australians    
  • Developing strategies for respectful work with Aboriginal Australians    

The PD session references the following AITSL Australian Professional standards for Teachers

Standard 1 – Know students and how they learn

Standard 2 – Know the content and how to teach it

Standard 6 – Engage in professional learning

Standard 7 – Engage professionally with colleagues, parents/carers and the community
