Engaging Marginalised Families, Understanding Children who are under the guardianship of the Minister

$30

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This professional learning will develop an understanding of typical neurobiological development in children. With this in mind the workshop will then explore the effects of complex trauma on brain, body, memory, behaviour, learning and relationships.

From this basis it will explore the theoretical perspectives of trans-generational trauma and its impact on family functioning, the developing child and educational implications. Further, it will consider how trans-generational trauma influences resilience, adaptability and survival, with further emphasis on hereditary structures and epigenetics.

This workshop is aimed at bringing an educational perspective to the broad issues vulnerable children face. In particular, the difficulties in engaging and re-engaging marginalised parents who have also experienced complex trauma and the long term implications.

Children and young people under the Guardianship of the Minister have lived within families who are not only marginalised but who have complex needs. The workshop will assist in developing processes for early identification of these children and strategies that support them to stay engaged with the school community.

Through activities, case studies and strategies we will link theory with practical applications that can be adapted to suit individual schools and classroom settings.
