Peter Harney cfc was born and raised in Rockhampton (Queensland, Australia) where he received his primary and secondary education before joining the Christian Brothers in 1967. He completed his teacher training and obtained a Bachelor of Education (1975) and a Masters in Educational Studies from the University of Queensland (1979). He was awarded the first Doctor of Philosophy Degree from the Australian Catholic University in 1997 and gained a Diploma in Corporate Governance from the Australian Institute of Company Directors in 2011. He was a lecturer at Xavier Teachers College Queensland (1975-1979), Principal of Kaindi Teachers College Papua New Guinea (1986-1991) and held the Chair of Social Ministry University of Notre Dame Australia (1999-2003). He was also Principal of Nudgee Senior College and Nudgee Junior College. He helped facilitate the cross-cultural renewal program ‘Passover’ in 2003 as member of the Congregation of Christian Brothers Renewal Team (2003- 2007).
