This application is only for teachers who have completed approved catholic studies unit(s) outside of the University of SA Graduate Certificate in Catholic Education program (eg teachers who have completed Catholic Studies Sequence units as part of their Bachelor/Master of Education).
Teachers already admitted into the University of SA Graduate Certificate in Catholic Education program do not need to apply as the Program Administrator, Carmen Larwood will automatically process the CPF 1 & 2 on their behalf.

You will receive an automated confirmation email from the CESA Registration Centre when you have successfully submitted a CPF Level 1 / 2 application. If you do not receive this email, you have not successfully submitted an application.

Deputy Principals and Principals are not eligible for CPF Allowances.

For study completed during 2025

To be eligible for 2026 Catholic Professional Formation (CPF) Allowance Level 3 you must have previously received CPF 2, and have completed, in 2025, two Accredited Catholic Studies Modules or Approved University level Catholic Studies units in any of the following combinations -

1 System Accredited Module (SAM) and assessment, together with 1 School Accredited Module (ScAM) - or -
2 System Accredited Modules (SAMs) and 2 assessments - or -
1 of the above modules and 1 approved tertiary Catholic Studies unit - or -
2 approved University level Catholic Studies units.

If any of the study that you completed in 2025 was not offered by the CESA Catholic Identity and Mission Section, we will not have a record of you completing this and you will need to forward evidence of this study to Angela Brown at angela.brown@cesa.catholic.edu.au in order for your application to be processed.

2026 Mini Modules in the Catholic Identity Domain

In this format SAM approved module, teachers can choose which of the below 'mini modules' they would like to complete.

For this module to satisfy the CPF requirements, participants will need to choose a minimum of 3 mini modules to participate in, complete a 500 word paper for each of the 3 modules and upon successful completion of the paper, will then have completed one SAM. The 3 modules (and corresponding papers) must be completed before 27 November 2026.

It is in the spirit of professional learning and growth that anyone wishing to engage with the Mini Modules over consecutive years will choose different modules and thus, further develop their professional skills and understandings.

Upon registration, you will receive an email which includes an attachment containing further details and links to each module.

Assessment in Religious Education and the Crossways Performance Standards	The Religious Education Curriculum is the learning area at the heart of every Catholic school. As such, it requires the same rigour in learning and assessment as all other learning areas. In this Mini Module, you will discover: how the Crossways Performance Standards function to support quality assessment in Religious Education; and, how these standards help teachers to determine A-E Grades in the Religious Education classroom. Mark's Gospel in a Nutshell	The Gospel according to Mark is one of the tree 'synoptic' Gospels. This Gospel is short and action packed from beginning to end. It was written to be heard not just read. This Mini Module will explore the features of Mark's carefully crafted Gospel including his ministry of healing and preaching, major themes and the historical context in which he was writing. In Mark's Gospel, Jesus welcomes outcasts, offers forgiveness to sinners and casts out unclean spirits. Jesus uses the genre of parables to help people understand how they can participate in bringing about the Kingdom of God.	Kate Ordon
Matthew’s Gospel in a Nutshell	Matthew’s gospel, like the other 3, tells a rich and inspiring story about the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. Though based on Mark’s gospel, Matthew’s gospel is longer, adapting some of Mark’s text in interesting ways and adding material that is unique among the four gospels. His portrait of Jesus is also unique, along with Peter and the disciples. Matthew’s gospel also contains a wealth of teaching material which no doubt served to inform and encourage his community who were living out their faith in Jesus at the end of the first century in difficult circumstances. As you will discover it is no wonder that this gospel is sometimes referred to as “the Gospel of the Church”.	Kate Ordon
The World Behind the Text	Teachers familiar with the Crossways Curriculum will know that the recommended process for unpacking biblical texts with students is the 3 Worlds Strategy. The worlds ‘of the text’ and ‘in front of the text’ usually present no problems, but the world ‘behind the text’ can be more challenging. Importantly it is this ‘world’ that can help us to appreciate the full meaning and significance of the text, sometimes in ways that surprise or shock the 21^st century reader. This mini-module will explore some of the historical, cultural and religious factors that pertain to a range of New Testament texts and will enable us to appreciate them through the lens of Jesus’ original audience and the gospel writers’ communities. Extraordinary New Testament Women	Whilst most people can recall the stories of many New Testament men – the disciples, John the Baptist, Zacchaeus and Bartimaeus to name a few - the stories of women are less well known. This mini-module focuses on the lives and accomplishments of a range of extraordinary women during Jesus’ ministry and in the early Church. Their unwavering faith in Jesus, and courageous commitment to his teachings, continue to inspire his followers, both men and women, today.	Kate Ordon
Let's Talk About Prayer	This Mini Module has been designed specifically for teachers who are new to teaching in Catholic schools, but it contains a lot of tips and resources that will be useful and relevant for all teachers in Catholic schools. In this Mini Module you will: learn about the different prayer forms in the Catholic Tradition, develop an understanding of what prayer is ( and what it isn’t!), explore different prayer strategies and investigate a variety of prayer resources. Crying Out!	As Catholic communities we know that we have a responsibility to care for our earth and for each other. In this mini module we will explore the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference Social Justice Statement 2021-2022 Cry of the Earth, Cry of the Poor. There will be a focus on what Scripture can teach us and what we can learn from the Wisdom of First Nations people as we continue the conversation and discern our response. Participants will be taken through the learning design process step by step with tips and hints along the way. Luke's Gospel in a Nutshell	Of the four gospels, for many people Luke’s is the most loved. This year the gospel readings at Mass focus on Luke’s account of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. This course will provide an opportunity to engage with Luke’s account, to travel with Jesus from his birth to his final journey to Jerusalem and to ponder the significance of this gospel for ourselves and for our students. The course will briefly address the background to Luke’s gospel, articulate some of Luke’s concerns and major themes – and will break open a range of Lukan texts using the ‘three worlds’ strategy. Unpacking Parables	Jesus was a master story-teller – and parables form the bulk of his teaching ministry. They are a distinctive literary genre - one feature being their ability to unsettle us - to challenge us to new ways of thinking and acting. This course will focus on a range of Jesus’ parables which address different concerns e.g. the nature of the Kingdom, justice, mercy and the ‘lost’. The ‘three worlds’ strategy will be used to unpack the stories – i.e. the ‘world of the text’ and the ‘world behind the text’. In particular, participants will be encouraged to engage with the ‘world in front of the text’ in order to make links with the hopes and dreams of students today.	Kate Ordon
Mighty Miracles	Each of the four gospels portray Jesus as mighty in word and deed. Sometimes his mighty deeds are called ‘deeds of wonder’, ‘deeds of power’ or ‘signs’. They are extraordinary events bearing religious significance - and invite us to faith. This course will examine a range of miracles – their distinctive literary form and what they teach. It will also address the background of the stories - what was happening in the time of Jesus and what was happening in the gospel writers’ communities many years later. Where appropriate the ‘three worlds’ strategy will be used to unpack the texts.	Kate Ordon
Dialogue is more than just a chat	Participants will explore Catholic dialogue pedagogy and the opportunities in the classroom. This will be grounded by relevant system documents, the Wisdom Strand of the Crossways curriculum, and a reading by Pope Francis. This mini module will look at pedagogical approaches that consider authentic dialogue, the richness of diversity, creating a culture of trust and how we navigate this to ensure the dignity of all. A Deeper Dive into the Wisdom Strand	In this mini module you will have the opportunity to engage with the Wisdom Strand and understand its implications for curriculum design and pedagogy while exploring the cultivation of dispositions and how to create a climate for enhancing engagement, reflective practice and self-exploration. This will focus on going deeper in understanding the 'why' , the 'what' and the 'how' of the 'Wisdom' strand. Christian Meditation - A guide to implementing this prayer and wellbeing practice into your classroom	In this mini module, you will be given an introduction to the “3 S” approach to Christina Meditation – Silence, Stillness & Simplicity. We will explore what preparations can set teachers & students up for success in implementing this prayer form as a regular practice in the school day/week. We will also discuss FAQ’s and trouble-shooting hints sourced from 50 schools that engaged with the CESA Christian Meditation Inquiry which ran from 2015 - 2018.	Jacinta Astachnowicz

This will be a collaborative review between the CESA HR team and schools. Unlike the OSHC and Curriculum review, this process will not involve an external provider. The review will focus on current employees only, and any associated remediation payments and documentation will be managed at the school level.

These sessions are designed to support key school contacts in completing their Dayforce Data Migration worksheets, with members of the SHILOH HR Systems Team available on‑site to assist with organisational structure, job assignment, and management setup queries.

There is no formal presentation or set agenda. Instead, the time is dedicated for schools to work on their worksheets, with access to support as needed, between 2pm and 4.30pm

Foundations of Excellence Induction Program: Compulsory Component for ECTs and teachers new to CESA

A one day retreat experience providing faith formation for teachers early in their careers in Catholic Education. This program forms part of the Foundations of Excellence Induction Program towards accreditation to teach in CESA schools.

This Spiritual and Religious Formation will provide an opportunity to:

Provide enhanced spiritual and religious formation as part of their induction into Catholic Education South Australia
Provide pastoral, spiritual and mentoring support for new teachers to the sector

Introduction to Made in the Image of God (MITIOG) Sexuality and Respectful Relationships Curriculum Years R-12

This course is for teachers and leaders who will be teaching the Made in the Image of God (MITIOG) Sexuality and Respectful Relationships Curriculum and need to do the required training. Please note it can be used for CPF Level 3.

The aim of this is to assist teachers to develop an understanding of the Made in the Image of God, Sexuality and Respectful Relationships Curriculum Years R-12, and gain confidence and competence in teaching the curriculum.

This day will include:

Familiarisation with the updated Made in the Image of God Sexuality and Respectful Relationships Curriculum including the new structure and updated content
Exploration of values underpinning the Made in the Image of God Sexuality and Respectful Relationships Curriculum Years R-12
Managing sensitivities and protocols for the teaching of the curriculum

Primary and secondary teachers responsible for assessing EALD learners’ achievement and proficiency levels for the CESA EALD data collection

Each school submitting EALD data must have at least one representative participate in the Assessment Moderation process, either onsite or remotely.

1. To ensure consistency and reliability of teacher judgements for the data collection.

2. To provide dedicated time and space for collaborative or focused assessment

Understanding the purpose of DIBELS testing to identify and monitor early literacy development and inform instruction.

Administering and scoring DIBELS assessments.

Recording data accurately for the CESA DIBELS Collection Template and Dashboard.

Introduction to Progress Monitoring testing.

The session emphasises consistency, fidelity, and data accuracy to support effective case management and data-informed decision making at the school level.

This hands-on media training workshop will help prepare school principals for media interviews.

Topics covered will include:

What makes news? How to help your school make headlines
Interview techniques and preparation
Crisis management – what to do when things go pear-shaped!
On-camera (TV) performances
Radio news and talkback

This session will suit principals in schools or senior CEO staff who pro-actively seek media coverage and will prepare any principal for a crisis situation where media comment is required.

Places are limited to seven participants per session (This ensures all participants get to experience a live interview and receive a digital recording of their interview).

The SPiCE Program offers training for new supported playgroup facilitators. This training includes an introduction to the SPiCE Program, and guidance and support in facilitating supported playgroup sessions, locating appropriate resources, and accessing further professional learning. This training is intended for all new supported playgroup facilitators, as well as existing supported playgroup facilitators that have not yet completed the training.

Our New Facilitator Training includes an introduction to the SPiCE Program; what it means to lead a supported playgroup program in Catholic Education, Include2Play training (PGSA inclusion training), and How to Feed your Baby’s Brain Training (Paint Playgroups REaD brain development training).

Morning tea and lunch will be supplied.

Workshop Overview

The Learning English: Achievement and Proficiency (LEAP) Levels is the tool teachers use to formatively assess the Standard Australian English (SAE) proficiency of EALD learners. Aligned with the Australian Curriculum Literacy Progressions, it supports assessment of oral and written language across all curriculum areas. The LEAP Levels help teachers identify what learners know, what they need to learn next, and to monitor their progress.

Additionally, schools submitting EALD data for CESA funding must ensure that teachers conducting these assessments have completed relevant professional learning in using the LEAP Levels.

This one-day workshop will focus on:

building knowledge about the language/grammar of the LEAP Levels 1-6 language [oral and early writing],
applying this knowledge through guided, collaborative and independent use of the LEAP Levels to assess samples of language and identify learning goals and
oral language and early/emergent writing.

Preparatory work for Day 1 will be provided in advance.

Description

The combined Leaders of Learning and Inclusive Education Leaders Network day will provide an opportunity for Leaders to come together to deeply explore our collective approach to ensuring Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) are effectively and consistently embedded across Catholic Schools in South Australia.

This day will feature a keynote presentation by experts in MTSS at the Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO) and will be grounded in research, providing an evidence-based approach to discussions and planning for effective MTSS practices across our schools. Specifically, there will be a focus on:

cognitive similarities and how students learn,
teaching that aligns with how students learn – the components of high-quality Tier 1 instruction,
diverse needs and cognitive differences and
school-wide implementation of multi-tiered systems of support - designing staffing structures (teachers, leaders, specialists and paraprofessionals), timetabling Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions, and optimising instructional intensity.

Led by the Excellence, Equity and Inclusion section, expert guidance will be provided by our Curriculum, Assessment and Pedagogy Team; Diversity and Inclusion Team; and CILAH Team. Participants will have the opportunity to consider current MTSS practices in your school; identified areas of strength and opportunities for growth; consider strategies for improvement; and determination of roles and responsibilities at the school level to ensure effective practices are in place.

This retreat invites middle leaders to pause and reflect on their vocation within Catholic education. Through a focus on Scripture and guided sessions, participants will deepen their understanding of Catholic identity and explore how their leadership can nurture faith and community in their schools. Facilitated on Fridays, the program creates intentional time of retreat amidst the demands of leadership, offering renewal, connection, and spiritual grounding.

This is a one-day spiritual and religious formation opportunity is designed for middle leaders, including Leaders of Learning, Assistant Principals, Key Teachers, Lead Teachers, PORs.

Overview

This half-day workshop, offered in Term 1 and repeated in Term 2, introduces primary teachers to the newly revised Composing Written Texts R-6 resource, designed to support explicit and effective writing instruction across the Australian Curriculum. The session will unpack the resource’s model texts, and practical strategies within a scaffolding teaching–learning cycle, equipping teachers to confidently teach a range of text types and develop students’ writing proficiency.

Workshop Focus

Understanding the structure and intent of the resource: Explore Composing Written Texts R-6 (Ed 3), which aligns with Australian Curriculum Version 9.0 and the LEAP Levels framework. Learn how the resource supports the explicit teaching of writing across the year, with model texts mapped to curriculum content and linguistic development.
The Teaching–Learning Cycle: Experience the five-stage cycle (setting the context, supported reading and viewing, knowledge about how texts work, supported writing, and independent writing) and how it scaffolds students for success.
Practical Strategies: Engage with classroom-ready strategies for teaching the language features of different text types. Learn how to use annotated model texts and collaborative activities to build students’ knowledge and confidence.

3 Day Leaders retreat

Pilgrimage to Penola, Kensington and Adelaide in the footsteps of Mary MacKillop

The retreat is offered at no cost; however, accommodation is not included and is the responsibility of each attendee to arrange and fund for the Sunday 28 June overnight in Penola.

This retreat meets the requirements for Leader Retreats (Principals, Deputy Principals and APRIMs)

The Pilgrimage will be held on 28 June to 1 July 2026 and will visit significant sites in the life of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop as an educator, leader and person of hope. It will be facilitated by Sr Mary Ryan rsj, Assistant Director of the Mary MacKillop Spirituality Ministry. The pilgrimage includes the opportunity to visit places of significance in the 160 Years of Josephite Education in SA.

This Pilgrimage offers leaders a unique experience to reflect on the life of St Mary MacKillop as a resilient, faithful and hope-filled educational leader inspired by Jesus and how we can take inspiration from her in our own leadership today, with all its joys and challenges

Spend the day a the Mary MacKillop Museum & Bethany Centre, including a local heritage walk, time for individual reflection and a Chapel Ritual.

Wednesday July 1 - Adelaide

Participants will gather at St Mary’s College Chapel at the former “Poor School,” then walk together to St Francis Xavier Cathedral for Mass. A reflection, conversation and debriefing will take place afterwards in the Cathedral Hall.

Growing Deep - Strategic Formation in your School

A program for school leadership teams to use the Growing Deep Catholic Identity and Mission Strategic Planning Suite to analyse, understand, strategise and lead the enhancement of Catholic Identity and effective formation in their schools.

The program will begin in August 2026 and run into Term 1 2027. Using The Provocations Guide and The School Reflection Guide, leaders will identify Catholic Identity and Mission (CIM) goals for their 2026 annual plan and will use The System Support Guide to consider the practical pathways for ‘growing deep’ in the areas the school has identified.

The program is open to all schools and will involve evaluation of your 2026 Annual Improvement Plan and analysis of your school data in the Catholic Identity domain (including Living, Learning, Leading surveys, Pulse Check In data, ReLAT, RE Report results, recent ECSI Report if applicable).

This professional learning community (PLC) is a shared strategic and formational experience for school leadership teams to attend together. It is strongly recommended that at least two members of your leadership team attend all sessions, with one being the APRIM. Members of the PLC will consider their own individual spiritual growth (My story), their strategic work in enhancing the Catholic Identity of your school (Our Story), and connecting to God’s mission that all people know themselves to be known and loved by God (The Story).

This PD is for teachers who are new to planning, teaching and assessing with the Crossways RE curriculum.

During this day, participants will

Explore the purpose of classroom Religious Education
Understand the structure of the Crossways curriculum
Learn to navigate the Crossways website
Develop skills and confidence to build a RE learning design

Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and may bring along a cushion to assist with sitting on the floor.

Positive Behaviour Interventions and Support (PBIS) training
Tier 1 - Day 6

Tier 1, Day 6 (Classroom Practices for maximising teaching time)

Attendees: selected PBIS Tier 1 Team members, including classroom teachers. At least 2 participants, but as many as the school can send.
This is a train-the-trainer for participants, who will be able to select a focus practice for their school, collect data on the use of the practice (baseline), deliver multi-component PL (including establishing peer observation cycles) and then compare data post PL to demonstrate successful increase of effective practices.
The content for Day 5 will cover the six practices for supporting behaviour success and maximising teaching time. On day 6 (Term 3) the same participants will further their learning by adding practices to maximise student engagement with learning.
The training materials will be available on the CESA Intranet the week before the training - please download them and bring them with you. Please also bring a charged laptop or device for working electronically throughout the session.
Training session times are 8.30am arrival for 9.00am start, finishing at approximately 4.00pm.

Description

This course assists teachers recently* appointed to specialist EALD positions, to develop understanding of their roles and responsibilities in schools, identify EALD learners, organise effective EALD support and build knowledge of EALD pedagogy.

*Suitable for teachers who have taken on the EALD lead teacher responsibility within the last 1-2 years and those who are new in 2026.

This session will suit principals in schools or senior CEO staff who pro-actively seek media coverage and will prepare any principal for a crisis situation where media comment is required.

Using the Growing Deep resources and the Growing Deep Formation Framework, this day will look at how staff formation is facilitated throughout the school year using a head, heart and hands approach and considering the need for differentiation across school staff. How are the threads of people’s individual stories and the school story connected to the big story of God’s love in a consistent way?

Participants will be encouraged to share their successes and wonderings in this important area for the Catholic identity and mission of the school.

Above the Line Conflict & Navigating Difficult Conversations with Guy Newman

Most people avoid conflict, but without it nothing would change or improve. In this workshop, presented by Guy Newman, we change our relationship to conflict and learn how to take it above the line. We also look at how to prepare for, and navigate, difficult conversations.
