SUMMARY:Teaching Grammar and the Language Strand of Australian Curriculum English
LOCATION:CEO Conference Centre\, 116 George Street\, Thebarton SA 5031
DESCRIPTION:https://registrationcentre.cesa.catholic.edu.au/event-460713\n\nThis course comprises six sessions.\n Australian Curriculum: English is structured around the three strands of Language\, Literature and Literacy. In the Language strand\, students develop their knowledge of the English language and how it works\, and they apply this knowledge in the other two strands.\n The Language strand is further divided into substrands:\n * Language Variation and Change\n\n * Text Structure and Organisation\n\n * Expressing and Developing Ideas\n\n * Language for Interaction\n\n * Sound and Letter Knowledge\n\n "Grammar" within the Australian Curriculum is described by ACARA as being "standard grammatical terminology within a contextual framework". There is not one sub-strand of Grammar. Aspects of grammar can be found in each of the sub-strands (reflecting the view that grammar is not a set of decontextualised rules\, but rather grammar provides tools for creating meaning in texts).\n In this course participants will explore each of the sub-strands of the Language Strand. Teachers will trial how these sub-strands of Language might be taught\, in conjunction with the Literature and Literacy strands\, to provide students with explicit and deep understandings about how the English language works in real texts for real purposes (rather than decontextualised skill and drill).\n Whilst this is a new course to accompany the new Australian Curriculum\, much of the content of the course will draw from courses previously provided by the Literacy Team in Functional Grammar.\n Details of sessions:\n Date\n Time\n Room\n April 27\n 9 – 4\n (morning tea & lunch provided)\n 6\n May 3\n 4.15 – 6\n 8\n May 17\n 4 – 6\n 7\n June 7\n 4 – 6\n 7\n June 21\n 4 – 6\n 8\n July 19\n 9 – 4\n (morning tea & lunch provided)\n 7\n Venue: Catholic Education Conference Centre \n \n Parking: Is NOT AVAILABLE at the George Street worksite.\n Please refer to this map (pdf) and park in:\n * Queen of Angels Church carpark (off South Road)\n\n * streets surrounding the CEO.\n\n Registration: Closes Friday\, 13 April 2012.\n For registration enquiries please contact\n \n Elaine Mulhall\n Catholic Education Office\n Ph 8301 6694\n elaine.mulhall@cesa.catholic.edu.au\n \n Morning tea and lunch is provided at full day sessions.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n
