DESCRIPTION:https://registrationcentre.cesa.catholic.edu.au/event-2836345\n\nLiteracy Forum - Dr Misty Adoniou\n  Last Day to Register: Wednesday 14 March 2018\n  WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION\n Primary School Leaders and teachers are invited to participate in a seminar with Associate Professor Misty Adoniou.\n Dr Adoniou is an Associate Professor in Language\, Literacy and TESOL at the University of Canberra\, and an Honorary Associate Professor with the University of Melbourne Graduate School of Education.\n She was lead writer for the national English as an Additional Language Teachers Resource which accompanies the Australian Curriculum\, and a co-writer of the Literacy General Capability.\nShe researches and writes in the fields of literacy\, teacher professional knowledge and standards\, and is a sought after speaker\, nationally and internationally. She also works closely with schools and education systems around the country leading professional learning in spelling\, grammar and writing.\n The seminar will examine current research and data informing Leadership of Literacy in the Primary Curriculum.\n Misty will interrogate NAPLAN results in Australia generally\, and in South Australia specifically\, to show a significant decline in reading and writing performance as students move through their schooling\, starting with a rationale for decline\, using excerpts from the NAPLAN and PIRLS reading tests\, and samples of student writing\, to illustrate the kind of literacy knowledge students require in order to perform well. Participants will see that what students require is the ability to deal with complexity in language\, and depth of comprehension.\n The workshop will finish with suggestions for how to make 'ambitious teaching' the default mode in your school. Ambitious teaching expects high performance from students whilst providing them with high support.
