    Intended Audience

Teachers of EALD Learners in Years 2 to 12.

The focus will be on written language from all curriculum areas.

    Description

The Learning English: Achievement and Proficiency (LEAP) Levels is the tool used by teachers to formatively assess the Standard Australian English (SAE) proficiency of EALD students using written (and oral) language evidence from all curriculum areas. It is aligned with the Australian Curriculum Literacy progressions and allows teachers to identify what the learners know and what they need to learn next, and to monitor progress.

Also, all schools that intend submitting EALD data for CESA funding allocations need to ensure that teachers who conduct EALD assessments have participated in relevant professional learning about how to use the LEAP Levels.

2-Day Workshop Focus on written language:

    • Preparatory work for the first session will be communicated to participants prior to Day 1
    • Build knowledge about the language/grammar of the LEAP Levels 6-12
    • Apply this knowledge through guided, collaborative, and independent use of the LEAP Levels to assess writing samples and identify learning goals

This workshop will take place over 2 days and participation at both days is required.

    * NB - If you need to learn about assessing oral language of students in Reception and Year 1, please register for the LEAP Levels Oral Language Assessment for Learning (Years R-2) session (15 May 2024).

      Intended Audience

      Primary and Secondary Teachers
who will be making assessment judgements about EALD learners' achievement
and proficiency levels for the CESA EALD data collection

      Description

      MANDATORY Component

Each and every school that will be submitting EALD data must have at least ONE representative who participates in the Assessment Moderation process.

The purposes of the Moderation Activities are:

      • to provide assurance of consistency and reliability of teacher judgement of EALD achievement and proficiency levels, and
      • to provide dedicated time and space for collaborative or focused assessment.

How the Moderation Process Will Work:

      • Collaborative clarifying assessment task for teachers with less than 2 year’s experience.
      • Inter-assessor reliability check - all participants, both onsite and remote participants.
      • Detailed procedural information will be provided to participants closer to the time.

Mode of Participation Options (The Moderation requirements will extend over the course of the 2 days, Wednesday to Thursday)

You can participate onsite at the CEO (encouraged) or remotely (if you are unable to participate onsite), but teachers are only required to register for one option.

      • ONSITE physical attendance at the CEO
Face to face physical attendance at the Catholic Education Office on Wednesday and/or Thursday, 8.45 am – 3.30 pm.

This provides a flexible collaborative or silent working space to focus on assessing your writing (or oral language) samples, but you still upload your evidence to the EAL Network teams. This is the preferred option.
      • REMOTE (from school)
You can participate flexibly, as long as you meet each point in the timeline.
The remote option allows for you to participate in the Moderation activities (comparing assessments with your paired assessor) whilst remaining at your school. You are encouraged to facilitate assessment moderation sessions with your school-based colleagues. You will utilise the EAL Network Teams platform over the course of the moderation week to upload and compare samples.
